Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) is calling for the prosecution of first son Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba in the Military Court or Court Martial over political statements he made during his 48th birthday celebrations.
Lt Gen Kainerugaba, the Commander of UPDF Land Forces and President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s senior advisor on special operations, has courted controversy after using his birthday parties to make political statements yet he is stilling a serving UPDF officer, and therefore barred from engaging in partisan politics.
Last week, city lawyer Gawaya Tegulle filed a petition before the Constitutional Court seeking declarations and orders against Lt Gen Kainerugaba, who concluded his birthday celebrations at an event held at Entebbe Cricket Oval on May 07.
The opposition party has saluted the lawyer for taking on the first son, and is praying and hoping that the Constitutional Court will cause the prosecution of the ‘tweeting general’ who is rumored to have his eyes focused on his father’s seat come 2026.
“We welcome the filing of a suit against Lt. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba (commander land force), Gen Wilson Mbadi (CDF) and the attorney general relating to political pronouncements that Muhoozi has made or been making at his birthday parties,” said Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, the FDC Spokesperson, during a media briefing at the party’s headquarters at Najjanankumbi in Kampala.
“We thank lawyer Tegule Gawaya for filing the case and hope the Constitutional Court will expeditiously and transparently determine it.”
Counsel Tegulle’s prayers include a declaration and order for the prosecution of the first son for treason.
The FDC also believes that Muhoozi should face the General Court Martial, which other UPDF officers and generals accused of breaking the law have been tried. Some of those who have been previously court-martialed include Gen Kale Kayihura, a former long-serving Uganda Police Force (UPF) chief.
The party is also convinced that Muhoozi should not be a candidate for the 2026 presidential election when he has broken the laws.
“The conduct of Muhoozi goes against the Constitution, the UPDF Act and the Code of Conduct for the army. His remarks and printing of campaign T-shirts for the 2026 general elections is outright campaign that should make Muhoozi a candidate for general court martial. That should make Lt. Gen. Muhoozi a candidate for Court Martial and not Presidential Elections,” said Ssemujju.
“But because he is a son of Museveni, his crimes against the Constitution are instead being cheered by the whole military leadership and cabinet ministers.”
Muhoozi since sent a clear message to city lawyer Tegulle, telling him that the ‘Highest Judge’ is on his side and that of his supporters. (Read Story Here).
