A meeting between Ugandan President Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni and Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, his son, advisor and leader of the MK Movement, has become a talking point after photos from the convention. This State House meeting between Museveni and his son Gen Kainerugaba’s MK Movement Central Executive Committee (CEC) members is some sort of moment of truth for Ugandans and observers closely following the debate on transition and or succession from the nearly four decades of the NRA/NRM rule.
The May 03, 2023 meeting was attended by members of Muhoozi’s MK Movement inner circle, including Andrew Mwenda, Igara East MP Micheal Mawanda Maranga, Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, David Kabanda, and Lillian Aber, among others.
It was the first time Museveni and State House Uganda openly recognized the MK Movement, a loose political organization led by the first son, and a vehicle through which the youthful general hopes to ride on to succeed his father who has ruled the impoverished East African nation since 1986 when he took power after a war that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.
Details of the State House meeting remain scanty. The first son was pictured handing a document to his father. On one of the papers, ‘Khartoum’ and ‘Sudan’ are visible alongside maps. Gen Kainerugaba is his father’s senior presidential advisor on special operations. Museveni and Muhoozi have most likely been discussing the situation in Sudan. It remains to be seen if the discussion centered on interventions to pacify the country.
State House Uganda has confirmed the meeting between Museveni and the MK Movement CEC. State House also revealed that the president had acknowledged what his son’s political organization is doing to unite Uganda. The 78-year-old ruler also lectured his 49-year-old son’s MK Movement CEC members on the key ideals of his ruling National Resistance Movement.
“H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has met with the CEC of the MK movement. While noting the efforts of the group towards unity and cohesion of the country, he spoke to them about the need for Patriotism, Pan-Africanism and Democracy in the Socio-economic transformation of Uganda and Africa,” State House Uganda said in a short statement.
This is the first time that State House Uganda has officially recognized the MK Movement and its CEC, whose members were casually named on Twitter by the first son, known for his controversial tweets. From posts on his presidential ambitions, praises for his father and uncles Gen Caleb Akandwanaho aka Salim Saleh and Rwandan President Paul Kagame, to threats to capture Nairobi and open support for Russia, the tweeting general’s views have been all over for the world to see.
Basically, Museveni seems to have ‘endorsed’ his son’s political movement and CEC, one of its structures. This raises a number of questions on the 2026 election and the debate on succession and transition. Is it time for Ugandans to prepare for the Kingdom of Rwakitura where son will succeed his father?
About a decade ago, then spymaster Gen David Sejusa (previously Tinyefuuza) alleged that there was a plan to see Muhoozi succeed his father as president, and that political and military leaders opposed to the Muhoozi Project would be eliminated. This claim put Gen Sejusa in troube with the Museveni state. Muhoozi has since claimed that the framers of the so-called project had wanted to use this as a curse but his generation would turn it into a blessing. He even claimed he had never dreamt of becoming Uganda’s president. (Read Story Here).
Muhoozi would later tell his father that he is tired of waiting for him, forever, to hand over power to him, telling him to give way for him. (See Details Here).
But there seems to be some NRA veterans and top government officials such as Maj Gen (Rtd) Kahinda Otafiire who are said to be opposed to the idea of Muhoozi succeeding Museveni. Recently, there were rumors that Otafiire’s ‘soldier son’ was interested in running for president to knock out ‘Museveni’s standby generator son’ in 2026. Otafiire’s son Che has come out and opened up on his alleged 2026 presidential ambition. (See Details Here).
