Miria Matembe: Nyege Nyege is the Source of Uganda’s Problems

Former Ethics and Integrity Minister Miria Matembe Koburunga has tackled what is seen as the spiritual aspect of the Nyege Nyege aspect to Uganda’s current situation.

There has been a row between the executive and legislative arms of government over the 2022 edition of the Nyege Nyege Festival.

The row began after Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, prompted by moralist MPs such as Sarah Opendi of Tororo, to order the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, as well as that of Ethics and Integrity to ensure that Nyege Nyege Festival, which is scheduled to take place next week at the Itanda Falls, does not happen as planned.

Speaker Among and her colleagues argued that Nyege Nyege has been promoting immorality in the country.

But the executive, through Prime Minister and Kakumiro District Woman representative, Robinah Nabbanja, has since overruled the directives issued by Speaker Among, the Bukedea District Woman MP, insisting that Nyege Nyege Festival must continue under the watchful eye of security officers.

The Nyege Nyege festival is evil whether they want evidence or not. Nowonder Uganda is facing all these challenges.

But former minister Miria Matembe, who is famous for speaking her mind, has claimed that some of the challenges being faced by Uganda could be as a result of Nyege Nyege Festival.

Admitting that she did not have the evidence to prove that Nyege Nyege Festival is evil.

According to the former minister, the fact that the event happens near the Source of the Nile makes matters worse, since, according to her, there is something satanic about water.

She warned that Uganda will continue to suffer disasters because, in her view, God is not happy with the country over Nyege Nyege Festival.

“The Nyege Nyege Festival is evil whether they want evidence or not. No wonder Uganda is facing all these challenges!” Matembe told NBS Frontline.

“The devil works through water, and the festival is at the Source of the Nile. God is very angry with us, and we shall continue facing these calamities. That water is demonic. It’s satanic.”

It should be remembered that when Speaker Among and some MPs banned Nyege Nyege Festival, they claimed that the concert was a hub of immorality.

But government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo quickly warned that Speaker Among and Parliament do not have the powers to stop Nyege Nyege. (Read Story Here).

PM Nabbanja would later summon five ministers to discuss Nyege Nyege Festival. Nabbanja would later throw Speaker Among’s orders in the dustbin and insist that nobody can stop Nyege Nyege at this time. (Read Story Here).

Meanwhile, Speaker Among has since claimed that some people want to kill her and that she has received assassination plot reports against her life. (Read Story Here).
