Minister of gender, labour and social development, Frank Tumwebaze, has mocked US ambassador Natalie Brown after President Donald Trump protesters stormed Capitol Hill, disrupting a process to certify ex-VP Joe Biden’s November 2020 election victory.

At least four people have been killed in the protests.

After CBS News reported that “US law makers were asked to get under their desks prior to being evacuated,” Tumwebaze reminded Ambassador Brown and the US “There will be ‘consequences’ for those interfering with democratic process…. They stand warned!”

That is almost the same warning the US embassy sent to Kampala after the release of gay rights lawyer Nicholas Opiyo.

Civil society actors and human rights defenders play a vital role in educating the citizenry and must be allowed to carry out their work free from harassment. There will be consequences for those who undermine democracy,” the US embassy wrote, welcoming the release of Opiyo.
