Presidency Minister Milly Babirye Babalanda has said that Ugandans should not worry about the country’s transition journey since it is only God who knows when the current President, Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni was, according to her, sent by God, will leave power.
Minister Babalanda was on Friday, November 18, 2022, elated that Mbarara City National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders had decided to endorse Gen Museveni as the ruling party’s sole candidate for the 2026 presidential election.
Babalanda, one of the most powerful ministers in Museveni’s current cabinet, saluted the people of Greater Ankole for believing in “their son, their brother, a pan Africanist and a Visionary leader.” Babalanda then waxed lyrical about how she was certain that God had sent Museveni as a special gift for Uganda.
Babalanda went on to claim that it is only God who knows the time and manner in which the 78-year-old will leave power. “Ugandans and the entire world should know that Museveni is a God- sent leader to Uganda. It’s only God who knows when and how Museveni will leave power,” said Babalanda.
The minister further told the opposition and other critics to focus on the vision that Gen Museveni has for Uganda instead of making noise about his age and stamina. “Every after 5 years Ugandans go to the polls but they continue to express their undivided interest in Museveni. This is not because he is the only Ugandan available for leadership but Ugandans choose his unique character, commitment and leadership qualities.
Babalanda added: “You all know where Mr. Museveni got Uganda in 1986 and where we are today. Before 1986 Museveni spent his youthful years fighting for the rule of law. Today, Ugandans have chance to defend themselves before Courts of laws and elect their leaders, something which did not happen in the past.”
This is not the first time NRM’s leaders and groups are endorsing Gen Museveni for the 2026 presidential election, just one year after the country came out of a bruising political season that was the 2021 general elections. From Museveni’s own NRM National Chairman office to the Vice President, Jessica Alupo and a group of minister including Maj Gen (Rtd) Kahinda Otafiire and Norbert Mao. (See Details Here and There).
But there is confusion on if both first Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba and his father Gen Museveni will both on the ballot paper in 2026. Muhoozi has declared that it is time for younger generation to take over from Gen Museveni and his generation of older people. (See Details Here and There).
