Minister Kitutu’s Wealth: Here’s What We Know About Remanded Museveni Minister’s Properties & Life

On Wednesday, April 12, 2023, the Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala denied Dr Mary Goretti Kitutu, the Minister of Karamoja Affairs, bail over lack of substantive sureties.  The three sureties included George Michael Kitutu, husband to the minister who fell in trouble over allegations of diversion of iron sheets meant for Karamoja. Kitutu failed to convince court that he had the financial capacity required to surety for a person a minister’s status. A retired accountant, the minister’s husband is a businessman who deals in real estate.

Kitutu’s bail application hearing revealed a few interesting facts about the minister’s life, including her wealth. Aged 61, Kitutu, who represents Manafwa District Women in the 11th Parliament.

The minister resides in Bunga. She is also a proud owner of properties in Kololo and Wakiso. Kitutu was willing to deposit her land titles in court if that is what would help her get bail.

Although her net worth is not known, Kitutu has worked in both the public and private sector over the years. Her sweat and hard work have undoubtedly earned her some money which she has used to acquire properties.

ABOUT KITUTU

A former minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Kitutu is a mother of seven children and seven grandchildren.

Born in on September 17, 1962 in Manafwa

Primary Education: Situmi Primary School in Bukhaweka Sub County in present day Namisindwa District

Secondary Education: Tororo Girls School for both O and A levels

1984-87: Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry and Geology (Makerere University)

1993: Postgraduate diploma in education (Makerere University)

1998: Master of Science in Environment Systems Analysis and Monitoring (Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation, University of Twente, Enschede, Netherlands)

Later: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Science (Makerere University)

EMPLOYMENT

1988-91: Teacher at Busoga College Mwiri, Jinja

1991-96: Teacher at Our Lady of Good Counsel School Gayaza, Wakiso District

1998-2001: Consultant at Axis Technical Geo-Mineral Consult

April 2002-2015: Research officer and environmental specialist at the National Environment Management Authority

Later: Senior technical advisor and environmental monitor for USAID-sponsored Tetra Tech project

Minister Kitutu spent her Easter holidays in Luzira Prison after being denied bail. She had appeared the Anti-Corruption Court hiding her face in a ‘veil of shame.’ (See Details Here and Here).

There have also been growing calls for the arrest of Vice President Jessica Alupo, Speaker Anita Among, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja and a number of ministers named in the Karamoja iron sheets scandal. (Read Story Here).
