Lydia Mugambe: Uganda’s new IGG

President Yoweri Museveni has named Justice Lydia Mugambe Ssali Uganda’s Inspector General of Government (IGG)

Mugambe replaces Irene Mulyagonja at the Inspectorate of Government, an independent institution charged with the responsibility of eliminating corruption, abuse of authority and of public office.

Museveni appointed Mulyagonja, a judge on the Court of Appeal bench.

·         Bachelor of Laws: Makerere University

·         Diploma in Legal Practice: Law Development Centre in Kampala

·         Master of Laws: University of Pretoria, South Africa

Work

–          May 2013: Appointed Judge of the High Court’s Civil Division

–          Legal researcher at the International Bar Association in London, UK

–          Legal Counsel at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in Arusha, Tanzania

Awards

–          Vera Chirwa human rights award, University of Pretoria (2019)

New Roles

As IGG, Mugambe will supervise the directorate in the fight against corruption:

–          investigate or cause investigation,

–          arrest or cause arrest,

–          prosecute or cause prosecution,

–          make orders and give directions during investigations;

–          access and search – enter and inspect premises or property or search a person or bank account or safe deposit box
