Lukwago explains what he went through – and how doctors worked hard to save his life in Nairobi

Kampala Lord Mayor and People’s Government (PG)  Deputy President Erias Lukwago has spoken out on his health condition, what he has gone through and about top doctors’ efforts to save his life.

Speaking on December 05, Lukwago said he was “sill in Nairobi city receiving treatment for a disease which attacked my lungs.”

“This respiratory disease really affected me badly.”

Lukwago speaking about his health condition in Nairobi.

He explained that top doctors, including pulmonologists, at Rubaga Hospital and the Mulago National Referral Hospital, recommended that he flies to Nairobi because there are better health facilities, with renowned experts and advanced machinery to handle his situation.

Consequently, a joint team of doctors from Aga Khan Hospital and Nairobi Hospital diagnosed him with vascular pulmonary dysfunction and bronchial spasm

Vascular pulmonary dysfunction, VPD in short, affects the blood vessels in the lungs.

Bronchial spasm, also referred to as bronchospasm, is defined as a sudden constriction of the muscles in the walls of the bronchioles, according to several online resources.

It is caused by the release or degranulation of substances from mast cells or basophils under the influence of anaphylatoxins.

Doctors warn that the condition may cause mild or severe difficulty in breathing.

Indeed, in Nairobi, top experts were concerned Lukwago’s condition could result in a devastating blood clot.

“The doctors’ tests revealed that I have a problem on the lung muscles and vessels. The vessels that carry blood to the lungs have become weak and got an inflammation, and also got wounded,” said the Lord Mayor.

“The doctors were worried that it would result into a pulmonary clot which would have resulted in death. They have done all that is humanly possible to ensure that doesn’t happen and I thank them.”

He further paraded some of the medicine administered to him and the machines that have aided his breathing.

“I have got most of the treatment. They have told me I can access them in Kampala,” he revealed.

Now, doctors will monitor his health condition for about two days before he can return to Kampala.

Doctors have recommended specific exercises and use of inhalers to help his lungs fully recover.

Lukwago is seeking reelection as Kampala Lord Mayor.
