Standards regulator Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has released the list of certified maize milling companies weeks after Kenya raised concerns on safety of Ugandan maize.
Although Kenya lifted the ban after a few days, Uganda’s eastern neighbor’s government issued stringent conditions for maize imports from Uganda.
Now, UNBS has released the list of 23 companies that are certified.
These produce 27 brands of certified maize flour and maize grains.
“This is in line with the UNBS mandate of consumer protection, aimed at protecting Ugandans from buying substandard maize flour which could be harmful to their health,” said UNBS.
The standards agency says it has received applications from over 50 maize flour dealers, “who are in the process of certification.”
