Uganda’s government has suspended operations of at least eight companies that export labour to the Middle East.
Deputy national coordinator for prevention of trafficking in persons at the internal affairs ministry Agnes Igoye accused the labour export companies of human trafficking, and forgeries.
“Some of these were engaged in forgeries and their licences were not extended. The Ministry of Gender also got complaints from several Ugandans against some of these companies,” said Igoye.
“We ask Ugandans not to use them for labour export because they are no longer licensed. If you see anybody working with these agencies pursuing you, report to us. They use social media to recruit you but don’t accept. Be careful. Not everything you see looking good is one.”
Uganda’s gender, labor and social development estimates over 12,000 people are flown by these labour companies to the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and United Arab Emirates (UAE).
But some exported workers, especially maids, have complained of suffering in the Middle East akin to slavery.
