The list of successful Students’ Loan Scheme Beneficiaries for the Academic Year 2023-24 is out. The State Minister for Higher Education, John Chrysostom Muyingo today released the list of successful candidates on June 05, 2024 in Kampala.
Eng Dr Charles Wana-Etyem, the Chairperson Governance Board of the Higher Education Students’ Financing Board (HESFB), presented the loan award report.
According to the loan award report, only 1,912 students qualified for the study loans for the academic year 2023-24.
But the HESFB only selected 1,100 most qualifying applicants due to a limited resource envelope.
These will share a budgetary allocation of Shs5.2bn.
Of the 1,100 beneficiaries, 67 per cent are males while 33 per cent are females.
Up to 83 per cent of the beneficiaries will pursue undergraduate degree programs while 17 per cent will go for undergraduate diploma courses.
Wana-Etyem explained that HESFB had admitted fewer diploma applicants because the Joint Admissions Board (JAB) had delayed to conclude the admission process.
HESFB Executive Director Michael Wanyama noted that the list of beneficiaries included 23 persons with disabilities.
Minister Muyingo promised to help HESFB get more funding to award study loans to more students.
“We recognize that there is need for more funding to capitalize the Board as the current demand for student loans has certainly surpassed the available resources,” said Muyingo.
“My Ministry will seek audience with our counterparts at the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development and colleagues in Parliament for increased funding for the Board.”
