List: Here are the 47 arcades Minister Amongi has cleared to reopen

A July 14 meeting between Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs Minister Betty Amongi and traders’ associations has resolved to reopen 48 city arcades and to keep 200 others locked.

The meeting involved leaders of Kampala City Traders Association (Kacita), Kampala Arcaders Advocacy Forum (Kaafo) and Kampala Arcaders Traders Association (Kata).

It happened in the Conference Hall of the President’s Office in Kampala as police and military battled traders who had threatened to forcefully reopen their businesses after four months of Covid19 lockdown.

Traders under Kacita had complained that even when arcade owners had put in place the necessary standard operating procedures (SoPs), government had refused to reopen them.

Minister Amongi had recently said some arcade owners had not complied with the SoPs and would remain locked. KCCA and Ministry of Health (MoH) experts had inspected about 77 arcades so far.

As the 48 arcades reopen, about 200 others are expected to put in place measures that will help prevent the spread of Covid19 before authorities can decide on reopening them.
