Uganda’s Ministry of Education and Sports is expected to announce reopening of schools for candidate classes and higher institutions’ final year students, provided they commit follow guidelines and SOPs to prevent the spread of Covid19.

Closed since March to prevent the spread of Covid19, the schools will reopen, but a number of guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs) have been put in place.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has recommended measures to ensure safety of learners and teachers, and suggested ways in which to handle cases, if they the respiratory disease breaks out in schools.

Top officials at the ministry are still studying some of the measures to see how compatible and affordable they are, especially for private schools whose revenue streams were affected by the Covid19 lockdown.

Sources at the ministry insisted changes could still be made in some of the over 30 guidelines and SOPs. Even reopening dates may be revised, sources added.

Discussions are ongoing on whether to reopen schools and alter the academic year, so that candidates can resume studies for second term (during the period they are supposed to be in third term, and therefore doing their final year exams).
