Transporters under their umbrella body, United Bus Owners Association Limited (Uboa), have announced new fares for western, eastern and northern Uganda routes.
In a statement by their acting chairman Solomon Nsimire, Uboa say the move has been informed by the rise in fuel prices, with Uganda charging more for fuel than all her East African colleagues.
Nsimire also said the hike in fares was meant to ensure that bus owners keep in business since they are required to carry half of their capacity as directed by President Museveni in his Covid19 response measures.
But the new fares come about three weeks to Christmas and end of year festivities, when there is a lot of upcountry travel.
Bus companies are known to increase fares in the festive period.
