Internal Affairs Minister Maj Gen (Rtd) Kahinda Otafiire is a very interesting man known for speaking his mind and lacing his statements with some considerable amounts of humor.
Recently, Otafiire, who is also the Ruhinda Constituency MP, joined micro blogging social network Twitter and has been lighting up the site’s streets.
Gen Otafiire has also left some entertainment lovers excited after he openly endorsed this year’s Nyege Nyege Festival, saying Ugandans should be allowed to go and have fun since those who will attend will be adults who know what to do.
There has been a lot of noise about the festival after Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among and a section of lawmakers ordered for the cancellation of the festival, saying it is a hub of immorality.
Other people such as former ethics and integrity minister Miria Matembe even described Nyege Nyege Festival as the source of Uganda’s problems and as being somehow satanic.
But Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja quickly trashed Speaker Among’s orders, saying nobody would stop Nyege Nyege Festival at that time. (Read Story Here).
However, Gen Otafiire has said there is no reason to stop Nyege Nyege provided those who attend the festival do not infringe on other people’s rights.
Otafiire also called for the respect of Ugandans’ liberties.
“I am in agreement with my colleague Rt Hon Rebecca Kadaga. The festival is a good boost for the economy and tourism of Busoga region plus the country. We should stop interfering with peoples’ liberties with what they want to do with their lives,” wrote Gen Otafiire.
“They are adults, they know what they doing. Let them enjoy their excursions and activities so long as they are not an infringement of the law.”
It should be remembered that Kadaga, the first deputy prime minister and minister for East African Community (EAC) Affairs, has blasted Speaker Among for seeking to block Nyege Nyege Festival, saying those fighting Nyege Nyege did not want Busoga to develop and prosper.
Kadaga used about four minutes during her speech at the coronation anniversary of Kyabazinga to explain why she thinks Nyege Nyege Festival is good for Busoga and Buganda, and to tell off Among and others opposed to the event in the name of promoting morality. (Read Story and Watch Video HERE).
Meanwhile, Gen Otafiire has wished all people that will attend Nyege Nyege Festival, which started today, September 15, 2022, and ending on September 18, safety and great enjoyment.
“I wish all Ugandans and foreigners going for the festival at Itanda falls, Jinja , an enjoyable and safe weekend,” he said.
Meanwhile, a Minister in Museveni’s government recently dropped a bombshell, revealing that there would be spies to monitor immorality at Nyege Nyege Festival.
