Singer Edrisa Musuuza aka Eddy Kenzo has ditched President Museveni’s NRM, returned to Bobi Wine’s People Power and pledged to campaign for the Kyadondo East MP in the 2021 presidential election.
In a live online interaction on July 12, Kenzo, stuck in Ivory Coast for four months over Covid19 air travel restrictions, said he had distanced himself from People Power out of anger.
Last year, Kenzo met President Museveni and swore he would never campaign for Bobi Wine or his People Power pressure group.
But he has now made a u-turn and said he wishes for change in Uganda and will back Bobi Wine who has already expressed his interest in running in the 2021 election.
Kenzo explained that People Power annoyed him by not giving him a massive welcome on his return from the US where he had won the African Entertainer of the year accolade in the African Entertainment Awards.
“People Power supporters, even the bigwigs, did not stand with me when I needed them last year. I was returning from America after winning an accolade and I had announced that I would hold a procession from the airport,” he said.
“I expected to see many of my friends in the People Power Movement, but they were not there. That hurt me. It is what made me angry and say I was not going to campaign for Kyagulanyi.”
Earlier in the Facebook live interaction, Kenzo had said he would stay out of political alliances and stick to music.
“The events then helped me realize that I am an artiste and I don’t have to divide my fans. I have fans that support JEEMA, Democratic Party, and all those other parties,” he said.
“I think the only job I will do is to sing. Whoever wins should invite me to sing at the victory party.”
But he later said he would support Bobi Wine because he (Kenzo) yearns for change in Uganda.
“I want to retract the statement I made that I can never campaign for Mr Kyagulanyi. If God helps and political rallies are allowed, I will campaign for him,” Kenzo announced.
Bobi Wine and Speaker Rebecca Kadaga are some of Kenzo’s friends who have reached out to him during the lockdown.
