Former police chief Gen Kale Kayihura has described first son and Commander Land Forces (CLF) Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba as his angel.

As we reported recently, Lt Gen Kainerugaba has begged his father Museveni to forgive Kayihura.

After this report, Kayihura told government newspaper, The New Vision, that Kainerugaba was like an angel to him.

By calling the first son his angel, Kayihura underscores the frustration he has suffered since he was humiliated in 2018, firstly, through his sacking as Inspector General of Police (IGP); and secondly, through his trial in the General Court Martial on charges of failure to protect war materials, as well as aiding and abetting the kidnap and repatriation of Rwandan refugees in Uganda.

Kainerugaba’s call onto his father, for whom he is a senior presidential advisor on special operations, points to how much lobbying pushing for Kayihura’s pardon could have gone on behind the scenes.

Kayihura has expressed gladness that the CLF had made a bold step to urge his father to forgive him.

“I appreciate the efforts of Gen Keinerugaba,” Kayihura told the government newspaper.

“He is an angel to me, and I am sincerely happy.”

Although Museveni promised to direct military prosecution to pardon Kayihura, the president is yet to fulfill the pledge he made at a January 2021 campaign rally in Kisoro, where the former police chief hails from.

Since his fallout with Museveni, and his release from military detention, Kayihura has spent most of his time at his farm in Lyantonde District’s Kashagama area.

Recently, the Uganda Law Council approved Kayihura’s application to become an advocate of the High Court of Uganda.
