Katikkiro Mayiga: Security agencies’ actions making Ugandans hate Museveni government

Buganda Kingdom prime minister Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga has expressed worry that security agencies’ actions are prompting Ugandans to hate the Museveni government and their own country.

Security agencies have been in the news over the kidnap and detention of National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters.

Katikkiro Mayiga says that although Buganda’s monarch Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi warned security officers on violence ahead of elections, these have not changed.

“His Makesty the Kabaka condemned the acts of murder and violence meted against people in Buganda, and Uganda in general. He urged the security agencies to respect human rights,” Mayiga reminded the Buganda Lukiiko or Parliament on March 15.

“The Kabaka delivered this message before the elections but it seems those for whom it was intended ignored it and continued with acts that oppress people and end their lives.”

Mayiga added that the killings, arrests and detentions of NUP supporters are obviously politically motivated.

“Those crimes committed by security agencies and their officers have done much to make people hate the government in power as well as their country which they were proud of as ‘Mother Uganda,’ but now refer it as ‘Ki Uganda.”

Mayiga once again urged government to produce the suspects in the courts of law.

“If the state has cases against those arrested, let them be taken to court and charged in the stipulated time,” continued Mayiga.

“You can’t enforce the law in a way that breaks the law!”
