Katikkiro Mayiga reportedly favorite to be Museveni Vice President after serving Kabaka for eight years as PM

Reports that Buganda Kingdom Prime Minister Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga could replace Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi as Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s Vice President have resurfaced a few days to the official announcement of the new cabinet list for the 2021-2026 term.

Today, Katikkiro Mayiga marks eight years since he took over from JB Walusimb as Buganda Prime Minister.

Interestingly, even JB Walusimb is said to be on the list of those who have been vetted for the VP job.

Mayiga has in recent weeks been accused by some Baganda of failing to prioritize the Kabaka’s health.

Some even called on the king to sack Mayiga.

Sick Kabaka yet to fire Katikkiro Mayiga

Although most reports about cabinet appointments remain largely speculative, Museveni is seeking to replace elderly Ssekandi, preferably with a politician who can win him support in Buganda after Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine’s NUP wave.

Kiwanda, Muyingo reportedly lobbying to replace Vice President Ssekandi

This is not the first time Mayiga is being linked to the vice president job.

When Museveni visited the Kabaka at his palace in Banda in February 2019, reports emerged that the president had asked the Buganda King to allow him appoint Mayiga VP.

But Mayiga later dismissed the reports.

“There are rumours going on that I am going to be appointed Vice President and that President Museveni met Kabaka Mutebi at his palace to inform him about the news of me being his Vice,” said Mayiga then.

“I still have work that the Kabaka assigned me to do and that is what I am doing.”

Now, two years later, could Mayiga have made up his mind to work as Vice President, and is Museveni still offering him the job?
