Buganda Kingdom prime minister Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga has criticized incumbent president Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni for calling some opposition presidential candidates like Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine an enemy of Uganda, and his supporters fools.
Speaking after meeting independent presidential candidate Joseph Kiiza Kabuleta at Bulange, Mengo in Kampala on January 05, Katikkiro Mayiga took a veiled attack against Museveni, decrying lack of good leadership and demonisation of the 76-year-old president’s opponents.
Mayiga told Kabuleta and his team Ugandans “need effective leaders who are committed to the cause of the ordinary person all over the country.”
He went on to decry the “so much anguish in the country’s electoral process,” before taking a swipe at Museveni.
“Opponents are referred to as enemies… keeping law and order is described as crushing them, those with divergent views are labelled fools,” Mayiga said.
Although he didn’t mention names, Museveni is on record for calling Bobi Wine an enemy of Uganda.
“Bobi Wine went to America and said that people should not come invest in Uganda. That means he is an enemy of progress in Uganda,” Museveni said in an interview with BBC’s Alan Kasujja in October 2019.
“When you go and tell foreigners that they should not come and invest in our country, you are waging war on our prosperity. So why then do you want to come and take advantage of that prosperity?”
Museveni has also called Bobi Wine’s supporters fools.
“Kyagulanyi has fools who are backing him for presidency. Amongst the fools supporting Bobi Wine are the Europeans. They became fools long time ago. I also know the fools supporting him within Uganda,” the president told his ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders and flag bearers in Hoima in December 2020.
