Kahinda Otafiire: We Knew Terrorists were Coming to Hit Uganda Even Before UK Issued Terror Alert

Uganda’s Internal Affairs Minister Maj Gen (Rtd) Kahinda Otafiire says that the country’s security agencies had intelligence on plans by terrorists to hit Uganda even before the United Kingdom issued a terror alert and a travel advisory for its citizens.

On Tuesday, July 04, Otafiire told Parliament’s Defence and Internal Affairs Committee that the latest terror alert issued by the United Kingdom about an impending attack on Uganda was not new information to the Ugandan Government.

He emphasized that the country’s intelligence and security agencies had already gathered this information and the UK Government’s alert was simply confirming what the Uganda security already knew.

He urged Ugandans to report suspected terrorists and to remain vigilant at all times so as to deny evil people a chance to strike the country and do harm to citizens.

“The United Kingdom Government is a friend to Uganda. They alerted us to be careful because terrorists are about to attack us. It is a friendly gesture, what they told us, even us [state security] we had known about it. We had some information about it,” said Otafiire.

“What I am asking Ugandans is to see to it that we protect ourselves and our places and report any person you suspect may do harm to Uganda. It is not the first time that terrorists are attacking us and it won’t be the last, but it is upon us to protect ourselves.”

It should be remembered that the UK recently issued a terror alert and travel advisory in which it warned that terrorists were likely to indiscriminately target citizens and foreigners.

But in a reaction to the UK terror alert and travel advisory, President Museveni’s spokesman insisted Uganda was not at war. (See Details Here).

Meanwhile, Ugandan security have killed three suspected terrorists and arrested a man reportedly trying to smuggle explosives into the country. (Read Story Here).
