JUST IN: Three Ebola Cases Confirmed at Mulago

Three cases of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) have been confirmed at Mulago National Referral Hospital in the capital Kampala, Uganda’s Ministry of Health (MoH) has announced. The health facility is the largest in the country where the viral haemorrhagic fever was confirmed last month.

While the first case was reported in the district of Mubende, Ebola Virus disease has since spread to more districts, including Kassanda, Kyegegwa, Bunyangabu and Kagadi. Suspected cases and alerts, most of which have turned out negative after samples were tested at the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI), have been reported in other districts such as Isingiro and Mitooma.

Cases, mostly imported, have now been confirmed in the capital Kampala. Health Minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng said the three confirmed cases were part of the batch of 60 who are under quarantine at the Mulago Isolation Unit. The confirmed cases had been in contact with a person who succumbed to Ebola Virus Disease in the district of Kassanda.

Minister Aceng further revealed that the three confirmed cases will be treated at the Entebbe Isolation for Treatment Unit as heath workers continue monitoring the other contacts at Mulago. She urged Ugandans to observe all the prevention guidelines put in place by the Ministry of Health and emphasized by President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni.

“Yesterday 21st Oct. 2022, three individuals from among the 60 in our Mulago isolation facility tested positive for Ebola. These were contacts to the case from Kassanda who passed on in Mulago Hospital. They have since been under institutional quarantine in Mulago isolation unit,” announced Minister Aceng on Saturday morning.

“They will be transferred to the Entebbe Isolation for treatment Unit since the Mulago Unit still has 58 contacts under quarantine. Let’s remain vigilant and report anybody with symptoms similar to Ebola. Together we can end this epidemic.”
