JUST IN: Rebels Arrested by Ugandan Security Operatives in Two Districts

Ugandan Joint Security Task Teams, comprising the Police and UPDF, have arrested rebels in two districts in the country.

In North West Nile Region, security arrested a member of the self-styled rebel group of the Uganda National Rescue Front II while in Kisoro of South Western Uganda, a recruit of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) was nabbed.

The suspected Uganda National Rescue Front rebel has been identified as Bashir Surundu, a 21 year old resident of Ayago Village, Okuyo Parish, in Obongi District.

Ugandan security agencies accuse the disgruntled group of masterminding a number of armed robberies and violent attacks in the districts of Yumbe and Obongi.

According to Police spokesperson Fred Enanga, Surundu has confessed being in touch with others. He has been handed over to the UPDF.

“Upon interrogation, he admitted to being a rebel, who was searching for food at the River shore, to take to his other colleagues who included; Adinani Renda of Kulubi, Yumbe district, Akange Thuthu of Tikijure, Yumbe; Ngulu resident of Waka, Itula sub-county, in Obongi, Jamali of Tikijure Town Council and “Boy” of Tikijure as well,” said Enanga.

“The suspect was handed over to the UPDF, at Kulukulu barracks for further interrogation. Their commanders on our wanted list include; ARIS Habibu and Yassin Ssadala Dinga.  We would like to thank the community at Parolinya Landing Site for their level of vigilance that led to the identification and arrest of the suspect.”

Enanga further revealed that police at Bunagana intercepted an ADF recruit identified as Ashiraf Ssempebwa, a 29 year old farmer of Nakabiso village, Kavule Parish, Kiringente Sub-county in Mpigi district, together with his wife, Nansamba Fatuma, aged 21, and their two children, aged three years and six months, respectively, while trying to sneak into the DRC and joint the ADF rebel ranks.
