JUST IN: Norbert Mao ‘Man’ Gerald Siranda, Eight Others Elected Uganda’s EALA MPs (See List)

Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Norbert Mao’s Democratic Party (DP) Secretary General Gerald Blacks Siranda has been elected among the nine Ugandan representatives to regional Parliament, the East African Legislative Assembly (Eala).

The race had attracted 28 candidates but only nine slots were available.

The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidates, who were some of Uganda’s representatives in the previous Eala Parliament, were voted back.

Siranda, whose DP, recently signed a cooperation agreement with the NRM, was also voted in.

Besides Mao who months ago took up the role of minister on Museveni’s government, Siranda is the other high profile DP member that has benefited from the cooperation agreement between the country’s ruling political party and an opposition political organization, one of the oldest political parties in Uganda’s history.

After hours of voting and counting of ballots on Thursday, September 29, Speaker Anita Annet Among, also the Bukedea District Woman MP, announced the nine official representatives of Uganda to the regional Parliament.

According to the results, all the six NRM MPs sailed through.

They are: Rose Akullo, Denis Namara, George Odongo, James Kakooza, Paul Musamali  and Mary Mugenyi.

Two independents who were former MPs affiliated to the ruling NRM party also got elected to represent Uganda.

They are: Veronica Babirye Kadogo and Jackline Amongin.

Gerald Blacks Siranda was the only opposition candidate who went through.
