Former Security Minister Gen Elly Tumwine has died following days of hospitalization in Uganda and in Nairobi, Kenya.
Available reports indicate that Gen Tumwine breathed his last at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi where he had been rushed after his health condition deteriorated a few weeks ago.
It was not readily clear what exactly killed Gen Tumwine but the national army, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), was expected to issue a comprehensive statement on the death of one of the veteran generals of President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s National Resistance Army (NRA) bush war.
But reports about his health condition were came to the fore during the Covid19 pandemic when he appeared for a press conference at the Uganda Media Centre looking weak and having lost a lot of weight.
Tumwine died at the age of 68. Most of this time, he was in security circles, government or doing art (he was a fine art graduate).
By the time of his death, Gen Tumwine was a senior presidential advisor on security, having been dropped from cabinet in June 2021 when Museveni named a new cabinet, replacing him with Maj Gen (Rtd) Jim Muhwezi.
Gen Tumwine was one of the several ministers dropped from cabinet and consoled with presidential advisor jobs. (Read Story Here).
After being dropped from cabinet, Gen Tumwine blasted Museveni for being a ‘Ngamba Nyenka’ (Dictator), and warned that Uganda would get into trouble if Museveni does not prepare to leave power peacefully. (Read Stories Here and There).
