Chaos as Besigye’s Red Card Women Brigade, MP Adeke, Lukwago Deputy Nyanjura are Arrested

Police in Kampala has on Monday, May 30 morning, arrested a number of female protestors belonging to the Women Brigade of the People’s Front for Transition (PFT – Red Card Front) who were protesting high commodity prices, high cost of living and the continued detention of their leader Dr Kizza Besigye.

Besigye was arrested last week, and charged with inciting violence. He asked for bail. Grade One Magistrate Siena Owomugisha of Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court granted him a Shs30m cash bail which the opposition leader rejected. His sureties were supposed to be bonded  bonded at Shs70m non-cash, each.  He was then remanded to Luzira Prison until June 16.

“Buganda Rd Court, where I’ve been charged with ‘inciting violence,’ has just granted me cash bail of Shs 30m! I consider this an extension of the injustices I’ve faced for long. I’ve asked my lawyers to appeal it as I endure remand. All Ugandans should stand firm against injustices,” Besigye tweeted after being remanded.

Today, PFT Red Card Women Brigade leaders led by Deputy President and Soroti Women Representative Anna Adeke Ebaju as well as Deputy Kampala Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura have protested the continued detention of Dr Besigye, the tough bail condition and the high commodity prices.

Adeke and Nyanjura were also in Wandegeya to conduct spot assessment of how women in the area are currently being affected by high commodity prices.

But police arrested and bundled them on a truck before driving them to Wandegeya Police Station where they are currently being detained.

Last week, Besigye shocked Ugandans when he beat the high security deployment at his home in Wakiso District’s Kasangati to drive to Kampala City Centre and ‘awaken’ Ugandans to join protests against the high cost of living and the rumored Museveni-Muhoozi succession plot. (Read Story Here).
