National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has congratulated Ivan Ssempijja, the newly elected Makerere University guild president.
Ssempijja won the election held on Friday, May 07.
Although NUP had chosen Aaron Oguttu as it’s official flag bearer, Ssempijja outsmarted him.
Ssempijja polled 3,112 while Oguttu managed 1,833 votes.
National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate Edwine Bbosa Bwetuyita trailed with 248 votes.
EC chairperson Jackson Twijukye declared Ssempijja winner of the election held both online and physically.
Ssempijja is also a member of NUP, but the party had rejected him for Oguttu.
Bobi Wine admits that there could have been divisions, with Ssempijja refusing to quit the race for Oguttu.
Days earlier, the university Electoral Commission had disqualified Judith Nalukwago, who chose to back Ssempijja.
Also disqualified were: Derrick Obedigue and Mackzzon Muhwezi.
“Special thanks also to comrade Oguttu Aaron for running a tough race, and doing so with great courage and determination,” said Bobi Wine.
“Finally, let me congratulate Guild President Elect, comrade Ssempijja Ivan on winning the tough race.”
Bobi Wine has now called for unity among NUP leaders and members at Makerere University.
“Our hope now is that you comrades unite forces and continue to pursue the revolution for a better Uganda.”
With NUP winning guild elections at Mutesa Royal University, Kyambogo and now Makerere, Bobi Wine says “the young people of Uganda have yet again sent a clear message that they stand with NUP- they stand with Uganda!”
