Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) coordinator and former army commander Maj Gen (Rtd) Gregg Mugisha Muntu has cast doubts on the prospects of the 2026 presidential bid declared by first son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

On August 14, Gen Kainerugaba was in Teso to popularize his MK Movement, a vehicle on which he hopes to ride on to succeed his elderly and long serving Ugandan ruler Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni.

Gen Muhoozi had been invited by Speaker Anita Among. Teso elders handed symbols of power and blessed his 2026 presidential ambition.

But Maj Gen (Rtd) Muntu, a 2021 presidential candidate, seems to suggest that Gen Kainerugaba is far away from the highest office in the land and might never even hold it.

The ANT leader, who is known to be a slow but sure politician and one who believes that events over a period of time usually vindicate someone, says time will soon vindicate him regarding his scepticism in the first son’s presidential bid.

Deploying a Runyankore-Rukiga proverb, Gen Muntu suggested that he does not want to lie about the success of the Muhoozi Project because he is not certain about the same.

“There is a Runyankole-Rukiga saying that goes ‘ngu owaayanga kubaiha ati shinta’ translated ‘the one who does not want to deceive says ‘I am not sure.’ Some issues are just left to time to expose,” noted Muntu.

It should be remembered that when he was once branded a mole in the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Muntu had simply said that time would tell who the moles are.

A few years later, FDC is in a mega scandal where Secretary General Nandala Mafabi and Party President Patrick Oboi Amuriat are being accused of pocketing billions of money from Museveni to reportedly sell FDC to the president and his National Resistance Movement (NRM) as well as fight Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP). Dr Kizza Besigye recently revealed how Nandala Mafabi and Amuriat started speaking in tongues when he summoned them to explain the source of the dirty money. (See Details Here and There).

Gen Muntu has previously revealed what Museveni must do if he doesn’t want his son Gen Muhoozi to cause problems. He even called on Museveni to allow Muhoozi to retire from the army, join elective politics and see for himself. (Read Stories Here, There and Over There).

Meanwhile, retired army generals and other former officers like Maj Gen Muntu, Gen David Sejusa (previously Tiinyefuuza) have previously spoken out on whether they would salute Gen Muhoozi if he ever became president. (See Details Here, There and Over There).

For now, Gen Muhoozi seems determined to pursue his political ambition and looks determined to succeed his father. A few months ago, Gen Muhoozi got what looked like Museveni’s blessing to run for president in 2026 after he complaining that he was tired of waiting for the old man to retire, go to Rwakitura and hand power over to him.
