Ugandan main opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu aka Bobi Wine has eaten his words on homosexuality in an interview in the UK on his first visit to the former Ugandan colonial master in about a decade.

Bobi Wine is in the UK for a film festival. It is the first time he is on the country’s soil since he released a song London labelled his song homophobic, and banned him. The ban was lifted only recently.

But the NUP leader has now said he is a changed man whose thinking has been transformed.

But he has now told the BBC that he seeks to fight for a Uganda that is inclusive. He seemed to plead for another chance with the United Kingdom.

“I wrote the lyrics and sang them and I took responsibility. Certainly we grow and we transform. I have always mentioned that I am a product of very many second chances and I want to be known for a leader that is respectful, inclusive for everybody,” he said.

Bobi Wine went ahead to castigate President Yoweri Museveni whom he claimed had ‘deliberately sponsored’ the Anti-Homosexuality Act to target the opposition.

“Gen Museveni did not bring it [the Anti-Homosexuality Act] in the general interest of the people of Uganda but it was brought to target the opposition, including myself,” he claimed.

Bobi Wine has previously spoken in tongues whenever the issue of homosexuality has come up.

The anti-homosexuality act made the World Bank suspend funding to Uganda, affecting a number of multi-billion projects. Even the US is pressuring Uganda to throw the anti-gay law in the dustbin or else risk losing AGOA deal. (Read Stories Here, There and Over There).

Meanwhile, even Bobi Wine’s fellow opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye has no problem with homosexuals, and so is his wife Winnie Byanyima who openly urged Museveni not to sign the bill into law. (See Details Here, There and Over There).
