One person was killed and six seriously injured in an accident involving a vehicle in Inspector General of Police (IGP) Martins Okoth Ochola’s convoy and a commercial motorycle or boda boda.
According to ASP Faridah Nampiima, the Traffic Police Spokesperson, On February 19, the Territorial Police in Bugiri registered a fatal accident along the Tororo-Iganga Highway at around 11am. The accident involved a Toyota Land Cruiser Registration Number UP 8517 which was leading the convoy of the Inspector General of Police, and a motorcycle Bajaj Boxer, Registration Number UEF 098H, which was being ridden by a one Yunusu Mukose, a 32-year old resident of Mukuba zone in Bugiri Municipality.
“The preliminary findings indicate that at about 1100hrs at Buwuni village, along Iganga -Tororo highway, several vehicles slowed down as they approached the convoy of the IGP that was heading to Kampala from Tororo. It’s during that process that the rider of the motorcycle, ridden by Mukose Yunusu, dangerously tried to overtake a trailer and other vehicles, which put him in the opposite lane, where he collided head on into the oncoming lead motor vehicle of the IGP’s convoy,” noted the Traffic Police publicist.
“The rider of the motorcycle died on spot and his passenger on the motorcycle whose identity is yet to be established sustained serious injuries. It is further established that the driver of the lead car, used his driving skills to bring the vehicle to a full stop. And it is during that process that two crew members jumped off the vehicle and sustained injuries.”
Nampiima has confirmed that a total of five crew members and the victim on the boda boda were rushed to Bugiri Hospital for medical treatment, but later evacuated to Kampala in a police chopper, for further treatment. The body of the deceased was conveyed to Bugiri Mortuary hospital for postmortem examination.
