There is some glimmer of hope for Primary Seven candidates of St Christine Primary School in Kakumiro District, who were supposed to sit the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) exam papers at Mpasana Primary School, but mist their Mathematics paper, after assessment body, the Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb) announced it has intervened in the matter.
While the candidates had prepared for the Mathematics exam, they were unable to arrive in time and were blocked from entering the examination hall. Their school director, Pascal Asiimwe, had promised to get a vehicle to drive them on a 15km journey from St Christine Primary School (which had no Uneb Centre number) to Mpasana Primary School.
But Director Asiimwe was no show and his mobile phones were unreachable, leaving the candidates stranded. Left with no option, they embarked on a journey to Mpasana PS but arrived there when other candidates across the country were already one hour and 16 minutes into the Mathematics paper.
After missing the exam, the candidates cried to Uneb and the government to help them not to miss a year. They asked for a special exam since their late coming was not their fault. Now, Uneb has announced that it is working on an intervention that could see the candidates breathe a sigh of relief.
Uneb says it was aware of the Mpasana Primary School case and was in talks with the those responsible for education in Kakumiro District to chart a way forward on the matter, with the view of helping those who missed the paper helped.
“The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has received information from our field officers that 23 out of 26 candidates of Mpasana Primary School in Kakumiro missed writing the Mathematics paper on November 8, 2022, the first day of the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE),” said Dan N Odongo, the Uneb Executive Director and Executive Secretary.
“UNEB is consulting with the District Education Officials to ascertain the circumstances under which the learners missed the examination. The Board is also scheduling a meeting with the District Officials on this matter, after which, an appropriate decision will be made.”
Uneb concluded PLE exams this week amidst the Ebola outbreak in the country. Uneb even had a special examination centre for candidates suffering from Ebola or those exposed to the viral disease. (See Details Here).
The next set of exams to be conducted by Uneb will be the Senior Six or A-level Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) exams which will happen after next week. (See Full UACE timetable Here).
