Speaker of Parliament of Uganda Anita Annet Among has met Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church, at the Vatican.
Speaker Among, who is also the Bukedea District Woman MP, left Uganda to meet the Pope on August 23.
“I have left for Rome, Italy on the invitation of the Holy See. I will have the opportunity to greet the Holy Father at the conclusion of the general audience. I look forward to a fulfilling experience with the Holy Father and fellowship with my brothers and sisters in Christ,” she revealed as she left.
She has since met the Holy See at the Vatican in Rome. Among praised the pope for praying for her as well as blessing her to rise in leadership. Among also delivered greetings from Uganda’s President Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni to the Holy Father.
The speaker said she was honored that Pope Francis had invited her to the Vatican. She noted that the last time she had visited the pope was in August 2021 shortly after fellow MPs chose her as deputy speaker of the 11th Parliament. A year later, Among has visited as speaker after replacing Jacob L’Okori Oulanyah who passed on months ago.
Pope Francis promised to keep praying for Anita Among and sending her blessings. The pope was happy that Among had risen from the position of deputy speaker to speaker in just one year after visiting the Holy Father.
He advised Among to keep defending Christian values and to ensure that Parliament passes laws that promote people’s freedom such as that of worship, economic and social justice. Pope Francis also warned Among against pushing for pieces of legislation that drive Ugandans from the love and will of God.
Among promised the pope that she will keep promoting Christian values in her work as speaker.
It should be remembered that Among rose to the position of speaker after her former boss Jacob Oulanyah died in a US hospital. (Read Story Here).
