Freshly declared father of the region by Kenya’s newly sworn in President William Samoei Ruto, Uganda’s long time leader Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni is celebrating his 78th birthday today.
Official records indicate that Gen Museveni was born in Ntungamo in 1944.
Museveni has spent nearly a half of his life on earth as Uganda’s President.
He took over power in 1986 after five years of a bush war that claimed hundreds of thousands in Luweero Triangle.
He has been in power for about 36 years.
A few years ago, Parliament amended Uganda’s Constitution to knocked out the age limit clause that would have locked Gen Museveni out of the 2021 presidential election.
Consequently, Museveni won a new five-year term at the end of which he will have ruled the impoverished East African country for four decades, and becoming one of the world’s longest serving leaders.
Given the poor record keeping practices at the time, Museveni was uncertain of his real date of birth.
September 15 is the date Museveni reached at as his official birth date after making consultations from elders about the events at the time of his birth.
The president says his choice of September 15 as his birth date is backed by scientific and historical evidence.
The president’s supporters, members of his ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and government officials have been wishing the president a happy birthday.
