Gloves Off as Besigye Demands Public Apology from Bobi Wine over NUP Supporters’ Attacks

Opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye says singer-turned-politician Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine should make a public apology to him over attacks by National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters against him and new pressure group People’s Front for Transition (PFT) Red Card Twetaase.

Since the launch of PFT last week, a section of NUP supporters have attacked Besigye online.

Days ago, Bobi Wine sent a message to Besigye, expressing willingness to work with him on PFT as well as condemning NUP supporters for attacking the opposition kingpin. (Read that story here.)

But Besigye says he is now sure why Bobi Wine doesn’t come out in public and condemn his supporters who attack Besigye, FDC and PFT.

“I called Kyagulanyi and he said he regrets the ongoing attacks on this front [PFT],” said Besigye during the Red Card Front’s press conference in Kampala on October 11.

“Some people have been asking me why he has not done that publicly and I don’t know why but I leave that to him.”

This is not the first time Bobi Wine’s supporters have attacked Besigye.

In March 2019, supporters of the singer-turned-politician attacked Besigye outside Buganda Kingdom radio CBS.

Meanwhile, Besigye has made it clear the PFT is not about political positions but liberation of the country.

“The structure of the front was of those who were on the table but this is not about leadership. Ours is just a struggle. We are not getting together for elections, our contestation is with this crisis,” said Besigye.

“Those who want to contest for offices to become presidents, mayors that’s not the aim of this front. Whoever wants to take leadership in the fight is most welcome but this is an urgent thing, we couldn’t sit back.”
