Former national army UPDF commander Maj Gen (Rtd) Gregg Mugisha Muntu has told President Yoweri Kaguta to allow first son Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba to retire from the military so that he can pursue his alleged presidential ambitions.
Aged 48, Lt Gen Kainerugaba is the Commander of the UPDF Land Forces, and senior presidential advisor on special operations.
But Kainerugaba’s latest birthday celebrations seemed to point to presidential ambitions.
On April 23, Kainerugaba held a birthday party at Lugogo Cricket Oval in Kampala.
At the party, Lt Gen Kainerugaba, also the Commander of UPDF Land Forces, unveilled his plan for Ugandan youth. (Read Story Here).
Earlier, Muhoozi had addressed those who participated in a marathon to honor him. The first son said the country was on fire because of him. (Read Story Here).
On April 24, President Museveni held a State House dinner to honour his son Muhoozi. (See Photos from Muhoozi Dinner HERE).
At the State House dinner was President Paul Kagame of Rwanda.
Kagame said that he and others have great expectations in Muhoozi. (Read Story Here).
Muhoozi said this was just ‘the beginning of many good things to come.’ (Read Story Here).
Now, according to Muntu, it’s high time Museveni allowed Muhoozi to retire from the army and join politics since there are indicators that the first son is already headed in that direction.
“If Museveni wants Muhoozi to run as President, let him be retired from the army, he announces his intentions, goes in NRM if he wants to and compete. You do not play Russian roulette with the country like they are doing,” said Gen Muntu while appearing on NTV on the Spot.
According to Muntu, a former presidential candidate, Muhoozi can convince some people by just quitting the army and going to the grassroot to look for votes.
“If Muhoozi stood firm and said ‘I cannot break a principle on the base of which a nation should be built. A uniform person should not engage in politics. I am getting out of uniform,’ some may believe in him.”
This is not the first time Gen Muntu is warning of the dangers of Gen Muhoozi playing politics while still a serving UPDF officer.
