Gen Muhoozi to Wait for Presidential Seat Longer as Father Museveni Hints on Standing for President in 2026

Uganda’s first son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba may have to wait longer to ascend to Uganda’s top office after his father Gen (Rtd) Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni hinted on running for the presidency in 2026.

While Gen Muhoozi and his MK Movement have been speaking as if they were certain that the controversial youthful general will be on the ballot in the next presidential poll, Gen Museveni seems not ready to quit.

Museveni has ruled the impoverished East African nation since 1986 when he took power after a five-year bush war that cost hundreds of thousands of lives. If he wins another term in 2026, Museveni will have ruled the country for 45 years by the end of that term in 2031 – and he will be 87 that year.

On November 16, the president addressed over 45,000 students from different secondary schools within the five divisions of Kampala city. The young people have completed a course in Patriotism.

Museveni told the young people to love their country and its people, the continent and the region because of their role in market expansion for Ugandan goods. The president also told the students to ensure that they love and protect the environment “because it is crucial and responsible for the rains, water and the good temperatures in the country.”

He also urged them to love themselves by avoiding alcohol, smoking and prostitution, telling them to study, exercise and fear God “because the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”

Museveni then revealed that the reason young people were asking him to seek reelection and continue leading the country was because he is healthy and fit.

“I am now going to be 80 years old, but you hear you are asking me to continue leading the war. This is because I am fit; I am not sick,” said Museveni.

“If I was sick in a wheelchair you would not be disturbing me by saying ‘Jajja tova ku main [old man, don’t exit the political stage].’ You say that because you see that I still have some strength. That is because I do not take alcohol. It is very dangerous for the body. I also don’t smoke cigarettes, let alone those other poisons which you take.”

Months ago, Gen Muhoozi told his father that he was tired of waiting forever, and that he wanted Museveni to exit State House for him to take over. Museveni would later appear to endorse Gen Muhoozi’s MK Movement. (See Details Here and There).
