A total of 1,113 students will receive study loans starting in the 2020-21 academic year, according to the list of successful Students’ Loan Scheme Applicants released by the Higher Education Students’ Financing Board (HESFB) on December 15.

This is the seventh cohort of the students’ loan scheme beneficiaries.

A total of 5,537 students had applied for the loans.

But only 20 per cent of these were successful.

Junior education minister in charge of higher education Dr John Chrysestom Muyingo, the chief guest at the release of the list of successful applicants, promised the ministry would push for more funding.

With 617 successful applicants, more males secured the loans.

Some 496 females also got the loans.

A total of 1,004 successful beneficiaries will pursue degree academic programs while the rest, 109, will embark on diploma courses.

Some 24 applicants with disabilities also secured study loans. This is the highest number of students with disabilities awarded these loans since the inception of the scheme in 2014.

Minister Muyingo said over 4,000 of the total beneficiaries had completed their studies “and are in the field contributing to nation building.”

HESFB executive director Michael Wanyama revealed that Shs4.55bn will be spent on fees for the 1,113 loan awardees in the 2020/21 academic year.
