Full Briefing for 2023 PLE Results: Performance by Grade, Subject & Gender

Results 2023 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) as released by assessment body Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb) indicate a decline in performance in higher grades (divisions) but an improvement in lower grades or division.

Figures from Uneb indicate that 749,254 candidates sat PLE 2023 exams at 15,859 centres in November compared to 832,654 candidates the previous year (2022).

Uneb said, 501,602 of all PLE 2023 candidates (66.9 per cent) from 11,365 centres were Universal Primary Education (UPE) beneficiaries while 247,652 candidates (33.1) of the candidates were Non UPE.

Of all the candidates, about 10.4 per cent failed, meaning tens of thousands of pupils will not cross to Senior One. (See Details Here).

Uneb executive secretary Dan Odongo told the nation watching the release of PLE 2023 results live from State House Nakasero on January 25 that there has been a decrease in the number of candidates who scored Divisions One and Two in comparison with the 2022 PLE sitting.

But there were more candidates passing in Divisions One to Three in 2023 compared to 2022.

PLE 2023 PASS RATE, PERFORMANCE SUMMARY

Uneb put the pass rate at 88 per cent, with 11.8 per cent of these scooping the coveted grade (Division) One.

Up to 648,662 candidates passed their exams and will proceed to secondary schools or other education institutes admitting primary seven leavers.

More boys scooped the coveted first grade (division). Up to 47,452 boys scored division (grade) one while 39,130 girls managed the same score.

In grade (division) two, there were up to 171,601 girls and 164,906 boys.

In division (grade) three, four and U (ungraded), there were more girls than boys.

Girls beat boys in English language.

But boys outsmarted girls in Social Studies and Religious Education, Integrated Science, and Mathematics.

“This is the usual trend for the past years,” Odongo observed.

The best done subjects, based on share of distinctions, were Science and Social Studies. Up to 9.8 per cent of all the distinctions recorded were in Science, followed social studies at 9.4 per cent.

Up to 7.8 per cent of all the distinctions were in English Language.

Mathematics was the worst done subject, producing 5.3 per cent of the total distinctions.

“Overall at grade 8 and above, performance is slightly better in English, Integrated Science and Mathematics. Performance in Social Studies is comparable to 2022,” added Odongo.
