A section of expectant mother victims reported to have been ballooned and abandoned by employees of VIS Contractors  owned by the Sri Lankans nationals in Kyarumba Town Council Bokonzo County Constituency in Kasese District have tested HIV/AIDS positive, local authorities have claimed.

The victims are suspected to have acquired the deadly virus from the said Sri Lankans contractor’s workers during the construction of Nyamugasana-Kyarumba Hydro Power Plant in the area. The project ran from 2017 to 2022.

This revelation was made by the LCIII Chairperson for Kyarumba Town Council, Ivan Bibuwa Bwambale. Bwambale noted that the victims have been organized so that they can be sensitized about the need to save for their welfare.

According to the Town Council Chairperson, the victims were neither defiled nor infected by Ugandan citizens but by foreign nationals (from Sri Lanka) before they flew out of the country at the end of the construction project.

He further noted that the victims are now stranded and only being assisted by their guardians and parents who have limited resources due to high levels of poverty in the area.

The parents of the victims whose names have been withheld condemned the actions of the Sri Lankans and the situation, noting that their daughters are now living in helpless situations. The parents called on the government and non-governmental organizations to come on board and see how the suspects can be traced and compelled to fulfill their responsibilities.

The parents, who admitted that their daughters could not easily identify the suspects if they were brought back to the area, also explained how hard they are finding it to cater for these pregnant girls as well as their other siblings. Sadly, some of the parents have chased some of these girls from their homes, telling them to go and look for those who impregnated them.

A few of the ballooned and abandoned expectant mothers told The Pearl Times that ever since they flew out of the country, their partners cut off all communication channels. The company bosses and their staff left Uganda after the completion of the project.
