An LDU guard shot dead UBC journalist Robert Kagolo at his brother’s home, police has confirmed.
Kagolo’s murder happened at Bugembejembe village in Wakiso District at about 8pm of April 29, according to Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire.
Kagolo had buried his brother Samuel Musiitwa in Namabeya, Gomba on April 28, and was making entrance to the late’s house.
“It is alleged that while Robert Kagolo was returning from the village after the brother’s burial, he hurriedly entered the late’s home which was being guarded by LDU personnel,” said Owoyesigyire.
A former Uganda Journalists Association (Uja) president, Kagolo would later learn that unknown people were trailing him.
He then “knocked the gate with his motor vehicle while gaining entrance,” continued Owoyesigyire.
“It is from there that a disagreement between him and two LDU personnel who were guarding the home started,” the KMP publicist added.
“Unfortunately, the disagreement led to a shooting of which the circumstances are being investigated.”
Medics at St Joseph Hospital Wakiso later pronounced Kagolo dead.
Police say “the shooter has been identified as Mamuli Rashid.”
Mamuli is currently being held by police, and so is his LDU colleague.
