Fresh Details Emerge on Killing of Police Officer in Broad Daylight Attack by Merciless Gang Which Burnt Vehicle, Stole Guns

More details are emerging on the killing of a traffic police officer in Luwero District in broad day light on Monday, July 25. 

The attack happened at about 12 noon at a traffic checkpoint at Kiwumpa Village, Kiwumpa Parish in Luwero Sub County of Luwero District.

Uganda Police Force (UPF) spokesperson Fred Enanga has identified the deceased officer as Police Constable (PC) Ronald Busingye who was cut in the back. The assailants also hacked PC Josephat Twinamatsiko on the head and face, before they took off with the duo’s guns.

“The preliminary information gathered indicates that at around 12.00 noon, a group of assailants armed with machetes, emerged from both sides of the checkpoint in a coordinated manner, and attacked the two field force officers, who were armed and providing security to four other traffic officers, at the checkpoint,” explained Enanga.

He also noted that assailants had used petrol to set a parked lorry Fuso box body on fire. It is said that the Fuso had got a mechanical problem on July 24 at about 3pm. It was at this spot that the lorry was being repaired.

The criminals would later flee the scene before jumping into a waiting getaway vehicle  around Kiwumpa Church of Uganda Primary School.

According to Enanga, security agencies were investigating the attack but the motive remained unclear although the assailants did not attack unarmed officers.

“At this stage, the motivation of the violent attack and murder is not yet established, although it appears they targeted guns for robbery. The other traffic officers, who were not armed were not attacked,” said the police publicist.

“We want to assure the public that we have reinforced our teams in Luwero to help identify and apprehend the suspects involved in the brutal attack.”

Enanga also delivered IGP Martins Okoth Ochola’s condolences to the family of PC Busingye and saluted the fallen officer for serving his country.

“The IGP has extended his deepest condolences to the family, friends, relatives and workmates of the late PC Busingye Ronald. And further wished a quick recovery to PC Twinamatsiko Josephat, who has been transferred to Kampala from Luwero hospital for better treatment,” noted the police spokesperson.

“The tragic incident is a stark reminder of the hazards police officers face, in their efforts to protect the public and keep citizens safe. We do honor PC Busingye Ronald for his ultimate sacrifice while serving the community in Luwero and the country at large.”
