Uganda’s army UPDF has confirmed the death of one of its soldiers during an operation against Cooperation for the Development of Congo (Codeco) rebels who attacked the Zeu Detach in the West Nile District of Zombo.
According to UPDF spokesperson Brig Gen Flavia Byekwaso, the UPDF Zeu Unit managed the repulse attackers in the July 16 6am operation.
“UPDF unit at Zeu in Zombo repulsed an attack by 20 men disguising as forest workers,” said Brig Gen Byekwaso in a statement.
She also revealed that the UPDF had captured two of the attackers and “put out of action [killed] 04.”
The army also got one gun, an SMG with 11 rounds of ammunition, 11 bows and arrows and three machetes.
“Sadly, we lost 01 soldier (MHSRIP),” announced Byekwaso.
She added that three other officers had been injured and were airlifted to Bombo General Military Hospital for treatment.
Commander Land Forces (CLF) Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba saluted the UPDF on a job well done.
“Our boys performed brilliantly and repulsed the attackers,” he said.
Meanwhile, Byekwaso has called for calm, assuring Ugandans Kampala would work with authorities in Kinshasa to track and bring to book Codeco rebels.
The rebels are believed to be Lendu fighters working with suspected Alur informers on the the Ugandan side.
