At least five people have been arrested in Bunyangabu District on allegations of obtaining money by false pretence after they attempted to con veterans.
The suspects were arrested in Bunyangabu District after they were reported to police for asking some people money so as to help them access benefits meant for veterans and medalists.
Bunyangabu Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Joshua Masereka confirmed that five suspects had confessed and asked for forgiveness after soliciting money under the pretext of helping them access the benefits under a veterans’ assistance program.
Masereka also warned locals against being hoodwinked that they can bribe their way to programs to which they do not qualify.
The RDC further warned some local leaders and individuals against soliciting money under the guise of helping the beneficiaries of Katebwa Civilian War Veterans through the illegal sale of registration forms and facilitation.
He also said he and other members of the district security team would keep on ground to arrest any more suspects named in this crime. He added that such suspects will be charged with the offence of obtaining money by false pretense.
