Education and sports minister Janet Kataaha Museveni is expected to brief cabinet on resolutions from a consultative education stakeholders meeting on the phased reopening of schools.

The decision to reopen schools was reached after a meeting between top officials at the ministry of education and sports and several leaders of education associations and officials from districts and municipalities.

At least 500 officials attended the meeting that was held virtually.

According to resolutions on the tentative school reopening program agreed on in the meeting, S1-S2 students as well as P1-P3 pupils will report to school within the next two weeks.

Although the meeting suggested a tentative reopening date, agreed on what classes should be allowed to reopen first and talked about guidelines, the final decision decision will come from cabinet.

Speaking during the release of the 2020 UACE examination results about two weeks ago, Minister Ms Museveni made it clear cabinet would make final decision on school reopening.

‘This does not mean that those selected learners will report to school immediately,” said the first lady.

“The date of reporting will be communicated to the public as part of a revised School Calendar once a re-opening date has been agreed upon by Cabinet.”

After the August 30 meeting, education and sports ministry spokesperson Kenneth Mugimba confirmed to NBS TV the minister would soon present the resolutions to cabinet for a final decision.

It was not readily clear when cabinet would sit to discuss the matter.
