FINALLY! Uganda’s President Museveni Signs Anti-Homosexuality Bill into Law

Ugandan President Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni has assented to the Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2023, State House has confirmed, making it clear that the piece of legislation has now become law: The Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023.

Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among quickly praised the president for executing his constitutional mandate as prescribed by Article 91 (3) (a) of the Constitution and assenting to the anti-LGBTQ bill.

“His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Uganda, General Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has executed his constitutional mandate as prescribed by Article 91 (3) (a) of the Constitution. He has assented to the Anti-Homosexuality Act,” wrote Among.

“I thank His Excellency, the president, for his steadfast action in the interest of Uganda. With a lot of humility, I thank my colleagues the Members of Parliament for withstanding all the pressure from bullies and doomsday conspiracy theorists in the interest of our country. By their action, we have lived by our motto: ‘For God and our Country.’”

The speaker also saluted Ugandans for their prayers and encouragement while the legislators executed their mandate in line with Articles 1 and 79 of the Constitution. She called on law enforces to implement the legislation.

“We shall always stand for and promote the interest of the people of Uganda. I now encourage the duty bearers under the law to execute the mandate bestowed upon them in the Anti-Homosexuality Act. The people of Uganda have spoken, and it is your duty to now enforce the law in a fair, steadfast, and firm manner.”

It should be remembered that for a second time, Ugandan MPs recently passed the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, in what looked like an ‘IF WE DIE WE DIE’ vow, making it clear to the US, European Union, and the rest of the Western World that homosexuality would not be forced onto Ugandans. Before Parliament passed the bill, the US Government had threatened to withdraw funding to Uganda if MPs passed the Anti-Homosexuality Bill. The decision by the US was seen as an ‘ACCEPT or DIE’ warning to Uganda since withdrawal of US AIDS support would mean that hundreds of thousands of HIV/AIDS patients would die since they cannot afford ARVS, for example.
