President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s son Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba and Rwanda’s Paul Kagame have delivered news of hope to Ugandans and Rwandans.

Kagame hosted Lt Gen Kainerugaba, the Commander Land Forces (CLF), in Kigali on January 22.

After the meeting, Museveni’s son said he was optimistic about the possibility of of the restoration of relations between Kampala and Kigali.

“I thank President Paul Kagame for the very warm reception my delegation and I received in Kigali today. We held very cordial and in-depth discussions about how to improve our bilateral relations,” said Lt Gen Kainerugaba.

“I’m confident that under the leadership of our two Presidents we shall be able to quickly restore our historical good relations.”

For his part, Kagame said discussions with Museveni’s son were “cordial, productive and forward looking about Rwanda’s concerns and practical steps needed to restore the relationship between Rwanda and Uganda.”

Relations between Uganda and Rwanda have remained cold in recent years, with the latter closing its Katuna/Gatuna border point in 2019.

Both countries accuse each other of plotting to destabilize their respective governnments and nations.

Months ago, Rwanda was accused of using spying software to track Ugandan government officials mobile phones. (See story here).

Kagame also accused Museveni of being a regional bully. (Read Museveni’s response here).
