FINALLY! Education Minister Confirms Reopening Date for Primary, Secondary Schools

State Minister for Higher Education Dr John Chrysostom Muyingo has confirmed the date for the full reopening of primary and secondary schools after almost two years of closure.

While a tentative leaked school calendar had put the reopening date as January 03, Minister Muyingo has said the date is a week longer.

Speaking during the inaugural graduation of Basasira Technical Institute in Nakasongola District on December 03, Minister Muyingo said all was set for schools to reopen on January 10, 2022.

“You are aware that we have been opening the education sector in phases. In September, we opened medical and health training institutions, followed by universities and other tertiary institutions on November 01. Now, the rest of the classes, including primary and secondary, will fully reopen on January 10,” revealed Muyingo.

But the date may depend on Parliament’s response since the reopening program and calendar are yet to be presented before the House.

It is after parliamentary approval that the program and calendar will officially be released to the general public.

In the meantime Muyingo has advised parents to prepare for reopening.

“We are now asking you, parents, to prepare. Schools will be reopening just after the festive season and, therefore, we need to be ready. Do not squander funds; spend sparingly and save for reopening,” advised the minister.

“This is the time to buy books, school uniforms, shoes and prepare our children schools reopening. We also ask parents to offer guidance and counseling to our children. This will prepare their minds to return to school.”

He also warned no staff will be allowed to access schools unless they have been fully vaccinated.
