President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni and Buganda Kingdom monarch Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II have discussed Mailo land tenure system and Federo issues in a meeting at State House Nakasero in Kampala.
Museveni said the Kabaka had paid him a courtesy call.
In company of the Kabaka were Prime Minister Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga, Prince David Wassaja and other kingdom officials.
The meeting came on the heels of the Kabaka’s criticism of Museveni’s proposal to abolish Buganda’s Mailo land, and Mengo’s renewed push for Federo. (See: Kabaka Sends Clear Message to Museveni on Mailo Land, Federo).
After the meeting, Museveni was cagey about the subject of his discussion with the Kabaka but said they had “discussed matters of mutual respect.”
“Held a meeting with His Majesty the Kabaka of Buganda Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II at Nakasero State Lodge. His Majesty was in the company of Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga and Prince David Wasajja. We discussed matters of mutual interest,” said Museveni.
“I thank His Majesty the Kabaka of Buganda Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II for the courtesy call.”
But Mengo has in recent months been pushing for the return of its properties, a federal system of government, and has heavily criticised a move by the central government to abolish the Mailo Land system.
