After Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among and her deputy Thomas Tayebwa informed Ugandans that they have vetted Josephine Okui Ossiya for a Bank of Uganda (BoU) board job, some people quickly started sharing this piece of information with a new twist – that she has been appointed the new central bank governor replacing the late Prof Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile.
In a letter in which he wrote to Speaker Among on June 19, Ugandan President Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni confirmed that he had reappointed Okui Ossiya as a member of the BoU Board of Directors.
On July 05, DS Tayebwa chaired Parliament’s Presidential Appointments Committee to vet Okui Ossiya. And Tayebwa communicated this exercise, thus: “I chaired Parliament’s Committee on Appointments to vet the Presidential nominee for the Bank of Uganda board, Ms. Josephine Okui Ossiya, this morning. The Committee will communicate its decision to the appointing authority.”
Alex Esagala, Senior Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker, has emphasized that DS Tayebwa’s communication was “ very clear and straight to the point,” saying Okui Ossiya was a “presidential nominee for the Bank of Uganda Board, not Governor.”
With the president not filling the position of the BoU governor for over a year since Prof Mutebile passed on, there has been a lot of speculation on who will succeed the fallen economist.
Meanwhile, on July 06, Deputy Presidential Press Secretary Faruk Kirunda confirmed that Museveni has since reappointed Josephine Okui Ossiya as a new member of the BoU board after successful vetting.
“In exercise of his Constitutional mandate, H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has reappointed Ms. Josephine Okui Ossiya as a Member of the Board of Directors of Bank of Uganda. Congratulations!” wrote Kirunda.
Some have previously claimed that Museveni had appointed former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi the new BoU governor while others recently alleged that Prof Augustus Nuwagaba had taken this juicy job. (See Details Here and There).
