Police in Luwero District say they have arrested Jamilu Ssekyondwa, a supporter of Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP), for reportedly spread fake news on the death of Uganda’s President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni.
The fake news of the death of Museveni excited some opposition supporters.
But State House quickly dismissed the reports as fake. (See: Museveni sickness, death rumors: State House Speaks Out).
Museveni also made a public appearance hours after the fake news broke. (See: State House insists Museveni is neither sick nor dead as president’s rare public appearances are explained).
The president has also warned tough action against fake news mongers. (See: Arrest all idiots who said I was dead: Angry Museveni issues orders as he finally speaks on his sickness, death rumors).
Now, days after Museveni issued this warning, police arrested Ssekyondwa from Luweero District’s Kamira Sub-County.
Security operatives had tracked Ssekyondwa, a resident of Kabuyata Village, using technology.
Operatives have relied on WhatsApp messages and conversation to track the suspect who had gone into hiding for days.
The acting District Police Commander (DPC) for Luweero, Patrick Maikula, claimed Ssekyondwa was a member of a NUP team that fabricates fake news posts on WhatsApp and shares them on this message sharing app and other social media platforms.
Currently detained at Luweero Police Station, Ssekyondwa could face charges of Cyber Harassment contrary to section 24(1), (2) (a) of the Computer Misuse Act, 2011.
Police hopes to rely on Ssekyondwa to track his suspected accomplices.
